Frustrated by sewage spills that dumped 60,000 gallons of waste into a Falls Lake tributary, Mayor Charles Meeker said Wednesday that the city should consider steps to hold the private operator responsible.

Meeker asked for more details on the extent of sewage spills involving operator Aqua N.C. since 2005, the effects of these spills on Falls Lake and an explanation of the rules that allowed a large sewer system to be installed near the lake.

PORT RICHEY — State environmental officials have warned Aqua Utilities about “possible violations of law” at two sewage plants in west Pasco.

Warning letters sent last week from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection chronicle abuses such as excessive solid waste and improper maintenance at the Palm Terrace and Jasmine Lakes wastewater plants.

Alachua County customers of Aqua Utilities Florida will see a modest decrease in water rates but also an increase in their sewer bill.

The company has about 800 customers in Arredondo Estates and Arredondo Farms in Gainesville.

Those customers will see water rates drop 7.4 percent. A typical customer using 7,000 gallons per month would pay $65 per month under the new structure.

Water rates will increase a hefty 65.5 percent for Marion County customers of Aqua Utilities Florida, which serves the Ocala Oaks subdivision. The hike makes it the most expensive water utility in Marion.
